Foam Mattresses
Not all foam mattresses are alike. Latex foam mattresses feel similar to memory foam, but they are made of very different materials. By the name, you would think that latex mattresses are made of natural rubber. Some are, but just as many are made with synthetic rubber, also known as Styrene Butadiene Rubber, or SBR. Latex mattresses are springier than memory foam. Some people may prefer latex foam over memory foam for this very reason. When you sleep on a memory foam mattress, the bed contours to your body then “remembers” its original shape when you leave the bed. Over time, a latex foam mattress will have low spots where you sleep. Memory foam is about five times denser than latex foam, so memory foam mattresses usually last longer than standard non-memory foam.

Memory foam mattresses have a remarkable history. Memory foam was developed under a NASA contract. It was originally used in spacecraft seats, to cushion astronauts during takeoff and splashdown. It wasn’t long before memory foam was being utilized in medical settings. When patients are in hospital a long time, they often develop sores from being in the same position in bed. Memory foam decreases such sore spots considerably. Memory foam also improved the comfort of Xray tables and dentist’s chairs. By the early part of the 1980s, NASA released memory foam into the public domain. At first, manufacturers were hesitant to make anything with the new foam, as it can be dangerous and difficult to work with. Fagerdala World Foams was the first manufacturer to create a foam mattress for commercial sale. They dubbed their 1991 bed the Tempur-Pedic Swedish mattress, and the rest is, as they say, history.
Nowadays, there are several UK bedmakers who craft excellent memory foam mattresses. We are proud to stock and sell quality foam mattresses by such renowned manufacturers as Swift Mattresses, Repose and Ventura.
