The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, devised memory foam in 1966. It was initially used in spacecraft seats. Within a few short years of its invention, memory foam was being used in medical settings. It can be quite difficult to work with. Finally, in the early 1990s, the Fagerdala World Foams company honed the manufacturing process and invented the Tempur-Pedic Swedish memory foam mattress in 1991. The rest is, as they say, history.
